The division of General Surgery at North Bay Regional Health Centre is seeking a locum general surgeon for a six-month period to cover a parental leave. Candidates must be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and hold an independent license to practice general surgery in Ontario.
North Bay Regional Health Centre is a busy community hospital with 489 beds located 3.5 hours north of Toronto. It is one of the major acute care hospitals serving a catchment area in Northeastern Ontario of approximately 130,000. Clinical resources include a 16-bed closed ICU, 8 ORs, CT, MRI, and advanced laparoscopic and breast surgery equipment including MOLLI.
The general surgeons practice as a collegial group with full complement of shared resources including dedicated elective operating room time, endoscopy resources, minor procedure and ambulatory clinic resources, and office space. The division of General Surgery is a committed community teaching site for the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, with regular resident and medical student learners. Multiple clinical supports are available locally in the form of other surgical specialties (Obstetrics/Gynecology, Urology, Orthopedics, ENT, Ophthalmology) and Interventional radiology.
Situated between Lake Nipissing and Trout Lake, the City of North Bay offers a combination of lush forests, spring-fed water and clean air which creates a healthy environment for working, living and raising a family. A variety of recreation opportunities exist in the community provided by the natural environment trails for walking, biking, or hiking. Activities for all seasons include beaches, a municipal marina, golf, recreational arenas, skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.

Duration of Position: 6 months, until May 1, 2027
On call: 1 in 6
Preferred skills: Community General Surgery, Endoscopy, Oncoplastic Breast Surgery
Remuneration: OHIP fee for service, HOC stipend. Overhead to be split with colleagues.

Existing physicians: 5 full time general surgeons; 1 additional on call general surgeon
Existing support staff: 1 receptionist; 5 medical secretaries (1:1 support)
