Staff General Surgeon

The division of surgery at Northumberland Hills Hospital is searching for a full time permanent general surgeon.

You would join an experienced group with varied practices. We offer an interesting practice with surgical and endoscopic opportunity. Areas of practice include everything from skin surgery and melanoma to breast surgery to abdominal surgery including hernia and colon resection. We have a great deal of experience in minimally invasive abdominal surgery. We support our community’s emergent needs, but also have subspecialist support from regional hospitals and tertiary care in Toronto.

We have an excellent group of anesthesiologists, all very experienced and collegial.

We practice in Northumberland County, anchored by the towns of Cobourg and Port Hope, with a catchment area of approximately 70,000 to 80,000.  It is a wonderful place to live, on the shores of Lake Ontario. It is considered a beach destination in the region. There are sailing opportunities, large marinas, and an excellent mix of housing possibilities from condo living to country estates. There is extensive greenspace in the area, with hiking and cycling and easy access to the hospital. In a community like this, the positive impact of a short commute on one’s work week is significant. Parking is within a 1-minute walk of the hospital’s doors. The community is, however within 125 km of Pearson International airport, nearly halfway between Kingston and Toronto on the 401 corridor.

Our hospital is supported by our community’s family physicians, as well as hospitalist-managed care. We have a closed ICU and stepdown staffed by critical care physicians. We have excellent emergency medicine physicians who work well with general surgeons.

We have excellent diagnostic imaging facilities, with interventional radiology, CT, MRI, nuclear medicine, U/S and X-ray. The radiology group personable, helpful and hard-working. They are local, dedicated to NHH.

We are completing the addition of a new operating room, bringing us to 4 total;  two are updated and integrated minimally invasive suites. We have up-to-date Olympus endoscopic equipment. We have nuclear medicine with sentinel node abilities.

The successful candidate will be offered 1 operative and 1 endoscopy day per week, as well as time in the ambulatory care facility. This hospital is integrated with EPIC electronic medical record.

This is a special place with a very supportive team and a desirable opportunity for the right surgeon. The supportive environment could be an excellent fit for a surgeon early in their practice, but all expressions of interested will be explored.
