Word Processing/Data Entry/Power Point
Although not a requirement, it would be good to consider acquiring software that is compatible with other offices. So, if you're sending a letter to a colleague or organization, it can be easily accessible by the recipients. (i.e. Microsoft Office is widely used).
Dictation Software
There is not a lot of medical dictation software out there. What is there is improving each year, but some surgeons might prefer personal services. The speed of electronic transcription might be considered a little slower (160 words/minute) rather than manual dictaphone/ transcription (twice as fast), and you will have to proofread software text also. That said, the software transcribes your voice in real time, while a person could take up to a week or longer. One example of medical dictation software is Dragon Naturally Speaking - Medical Practice Edition.
