OAGS Resident Representative

After careful review and consideration of the applications that we received back in the spring of 2015, the OAGS Board of Directors voted on the new OAGS Resident Representative during their board meeting. We would like to congratulate Dr. Patrick Murphy (Western University) and wish him well on his 3-year term with us effective as of April 25, 2015 (until approx. April 2018). We would also like to thank everyone who took the time to apply to this position. All of the applications were very impressive this year, which made it a very close race.

"The many stresses of our training are compounded by many challenges outside of our control and the advocacy on our behalf, while improving, continues to fall behind that of our medicine colleagues. Surgical residents are a minority on the Professional Association of Residents of Ontario (PARO) general council yet surgical residents have a longer residency than most other residents (internal medicine and family medicine). This lack of representation is likely a combination of factors including time management and perceived apathy to our specific needs, but leads to a relative short-sightedness for goals during our residency training. I would like to be an advocate for General Surgical residents on a provincial level and address resident/fellow specific concerns, not only in the short term but also in the long term." - Patrick Murphy, UWO, PGY3 (2015)

We'd also like to acknowledge our 6 Resident Liaisons. For any queries or concerns on General Surgery Resident matters at your respective program/region, please contact one of them or Patrick, and they will bring it to our attention.
