RESIDENTS

OAGS Resident Representative

After careful review and consideration of the applications that we received in the spring of 2018, the OAGS Board of Directors voted on the new OAGS Resident Representative during their board meeting. We would like to congratulate Dr. Fahima Dossa (General Surgery Resident Program: University of Toronto) and wish her well on a 3-year term with us effective as of June 1st, 2018 (until approx. May, 2021). We would also like to thank everyone who took the time to apply to this position. All of the applications were very impressive again this time around, which made it a close race.

"The current landscape of medical training highlights the critical need for policy reassessment. Unprecedented numbers of unmatched medical students threaten our ability to attract highly qualified trainees to surgical programs. Additionally, despite equal numbers of male and female students entering medical school, surgery continues to have difficulty in maintaining a diverse workforce. The #MeToo movement reminds us that our system is not immune to mistreatment and harassment and this, too, needs to be examined, particularly as it relates to trainees who are in vulnerable positions due to inherent power differentials in our training system. Levels of burnout among trainees and practicing surgeons have reached catastrophic levels and job prospects for graduating general surgery residents continue to be a concern. Having the resident voice at the table will be invaluable as we work towards developing solutions to these pressing issues." - Fahima Dossa, UofT, PGY3/SSTP (2018)

We'd also like to acknowledge our 6 Resident Liaisons. For any queries or concerns on General Surgery Resident matters at your respective program/region, please contact one of them or Fahima, and they will bring it to our attention.
